The Bronx, New York
Throughout the course in the South Bronx, participants face and overcome significant challenges such as homelessness, incarceration at Rikers Island and upstate prisons, and struggles with gang violence, parole, and probation. The impact of the program is further demonstrated as alumni from previous cohorts serve as panelists at Photoville, New York City’s largest photography festival, highlighting ongoing community engagement and influence. Additionally, a graduate from this year's cohort receives a scholarship to the International Center of Photography for 2025, underscoring the program’s role in advancing students’ careers and opening pathways into the professional art world.
In recent years, students have showcased their work at venues such as the Benrubi Gallery in Chelsea, the Shelter Gallery in the Lower East Side, and the Forum in Harlem, earning over $2,000 at exhibitions. Graduates leave with strong portfolios, which they leverage to secure paid photography jobs across New York City. Our NYC instructors actively redefine access to the arts and champion inclusivity, challenging societal perceptions of youth from system-impacted backgrounds and paving the way for a more equitable, representative art community. The newly established photo media lab in the South Bronx has become a vital hub, providing a safe space for young people to develop new skills and foster aspirations to enter a job market that was once out of reach.
The program continues to be enriched by renowned guest instructors Richard Renaldi and Gillian Laub, who elevate the learning experience. Students also have the opportunity to visit prominent institutions such as the United Nations, the International Center of Photography, and the Howard Greenberg Gallery. At the conclusion of the program, each participant leaves with their own Canon DSLR camera, empowering them to keep telling their stories and build on their skills.
